Turunen is best known as the former lead vocalist of the Finnish symphonic metal band Nightwish, which she founded with Tuomas Holopainen and Erno Vuorinen in 1996, being dismissed from the band on October 21, 2005.[1] As part of Nightwish, Turunen released five albums between 1997 and 2005, as well as four live albums, one extended play, three demo albums, nine compilation albums, five video albums, eight box-sets, ten music videos and fifteen singles (for further information see Tarja Turunen and Nightwish discography).[1] Turunen started her solo career in 2006 when she released a Christmas album called Henkäys ikuisuudesta and toured Finland and Russia.[2]

In 2007, Turunen released her second solo album, My Winter Storm,[3] and in 2010, she released her third album, What Lies Beneath,[4] Tarja had a cameo role in the Finnish film Yhtä Kyytiä (2011)[5] before starting the What Lies Beneath World Tour, which lasted until April 8, 2012.[6] A live DVD, recorded in Rosario during the What Lies Beneath World Tour, was released on August 24, 2012.[7] Turunen released her third rock album, Colours in the Dark, on August 30, 2013. Turunen released her first classical solo album Ave Maria – En Plein Air on September 11, 2015. In August 2016 she released The Shadow Self with a prequel EP The Brightest Void released on 3 June. Her latest album, In the Raw, was released on 30 August 2019.[8][9]

On 2 December 2022, Tarja released her first compilation album, "Best of: Living the Dream" in many formats to celebrate her 15-year solo career.[10] She later announced the beginning of the 2023 Living the Dream Tour in support of the compilation album, starting in the United States.[11]

On 14 June 2023, Tarja announced her next live album, Rocking Heels: Live at Metal Church. The new live album was released on 11 August 2023 by earMUSIC and is the first release of the live series "Rocking Heels". The album contains live recordings of her private performance which opened Wacken Open Air in 2016. The live album contains multiple metal covers, such as Linkin Park's "Numb" and Metallica's "The Unforgiven", as well as Tarja's own original music and a Nightwish cover.[12] The first single "Numb" was released on 14 June 2023, and the second single "Alias" was released on 30 June 2023. The third single "The Unforgiven" was released on 28 July 2023. On 23 June 2023, Tarja and EDM producer Torsten Stenzel released their self-titled debut studio album under the moniker of Outlanders.[13] On 1 November 2023, Tarja announced her third Christmas album, Dark Christmas, which was released on 10 November 2023.[14]
